There are plants that are perceived not only as part of nature but as part of the cultural code. Periwinkle is such a case. Periwinkle is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant from the dogbane family. The most common species in Ukraine is Common Periwinkle (Vinca minor). It is easily recognizable by its creeping stems that form a dense green carpet and its glossy dark green oval-shaped leaves.
In spring, periwinkle blooms with delicate five-petaled flowers, most often in blue-violet color, although white or pink variations also occur. Its flowers look fragile, but the plant itself is extremely resilient: it tolerates shade, drought, and even cold well.
Interestingly, periwinkle can spread quickly by rooting at the nodes of its shoots. That is why it is often used as a ground cover plant in gardens and parks.

Distribution and Natural Habitat
Periwinkle naturally grows in Europe, including Ukraine, as well as in parts of Western Asia. It can be found in forests, on forest edges, in thickets, and even near old estates or cemeteries.
In Ukraine, periwinkle is often associated with old villages — it grows near houses, under fences, and by wells. Sometimes it seems that it "remembers" those places where people have long been absent, but their history remains.
Thanks to its resilience, periwinkle easily adapts to various conditions and can live for decades in one place, forming dense green covers.

The very process of gathering periwinkle for the wedding was ceremonial: it was picked with songs, often by girls who were not yet married — this was supposed to ensure them a happy fate.

Periwinkle was also used in calendar rituals, particularly during Ivan Kupala. It was woven into wreaths that were set adrift on water — as a symbol of a girl’s fate and hope for love.
In addition, periwinkle has a place in Easter traditions. In some regions of Ukraine, it is placed in the basket for Easter along with the Easter bread, eggs, and other sanctified products. The evergreen leaves of periwinkle here symbolize the immortality of the soul, the rebirth of life, and spiritual resilience. This is not a mandatory element of the basket throughout Ukraine, but locally such a tradition is well preserved, especially in the western regions.
In some regions, periwinkle was also considered a protective charm: it was planted near the house to protect the family from evil forces and misfortunes.
