There are plants that are perceived not only as part of nature but as part of the cultural code. Periwinkle is such a case. Modest in appearance, it has accompanied Ukrainians for centuries during the most important moments of life: from birth to weddings and even farewells. Its everlasting greenery has become a symbol of resilience, memory, and the connection between generations.
Periwinkle is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant from the dogbane family. The most common species in Ukraine is Common Periwinkle (Vinca minor). It is easily recognizable by its creeping stems that form a dense green carpet and its glossy dark green oval-shaped leaves.
In spring, periwinkle blooms with delicate five-petaled flowers, most often in blue-violet color, although white or pink variations also occur. Its flowers look fragile, but the plant itself is extremely resilient: it tolerates shade, drought, and even cold well.
Interestingly, periwinkle can spread quickly by rooting at the nodes of its shoots. That is why it is often used as a ground cover plant in gardens and parks.

Distribution and Natural Habitat
Periwinkle naturally grows in Europe, including Ukraine, as well as in parts of Western Asia. It can be found in forests, on forest edges, in thickets, and even near old estates or cemeteries.
In Ukraine, periwinkle is often associated with old villages — it grows near houses, under fences, and by wells. Sometimes it seems that it "remembers" those places where people have long been absent, but their history remains.
Thanks to its resilience, periwinkle easily adapts to various conditions and can live for decades in one place, forming dense green covers.
Periwinkle in Ukrainian Traditions
Periwinkle has deep symbolic meaning in Ukrainian culture. Its evergreen leaves have become an embodiment of life that does not fade and memory that does not disappear.
Wedding Symbolism
In traditional Ukrainian weddings, periwinkle played a special role. Wreaths were woven from it for the bride, and it adorned the wedding loaf and the wedding table. It was believed that periwinkle brings happiness in married life, symbolizes fidelity and the durability of love.
The very process of gathering periwinkle for the wedding was ceremonial: it was picked with songs, often by girls who were not yet married — this was supposed to ensure them a happy fate.
Rituals and Holidays
Periwinkle was also used in calendar rituals, particularly during Ivan Kupala. It was woven into wreaths that were set adrift on water — as a symbol of a girl’s fate and hope for love.
In addition, periwinkle has a place in Easter traditions. In some regions of Ukraine, it is placed in the basket for Easter along with the Easter bread, eggs, and other sanctified products. The evergreen leaves of periwinkle here symbolize the immortality of the soul, the rebirth of life, and spiritual resilience. This is not a mandatory element of the basket throughout Ukraine, but locally such a tradition is well preserved, especially in the western regions.
In some regions, periwinkle was also considered a protective charm: it was planted near the house to protect the family from evil forces and misfortunes.
Memory and Commemoration
Periwinkle was often planted on graves. Its ability to remain green even in winter made it a symbol of eternal memory. It is not just a plant — it is a sign that the connection between the living and the dead is not interrupted.
Periwinkle in Folk Imagination and Art
In folklore, periwinkle is often mentioned in songs, tales, and legends. It is associated with purity, youth, and at the same time — with sadness and memory.
Its image is present in embroidery, ornaments, and decorative art. Stylized leaves and flowers of periwinkle adorn towels, shirts, and ceramics. This is further proof that the plant has become part of the visual language of Ukrainian culture.
Today, periwinkle remains popular as a decorative plant, but its symbolic meaning has not disappeared. It continues to be associated with home, roots, and traditions.
In times of change and challenges, such symbols acquire special significance. Periwinkle reminds us of resilience, of the fact that even in difficult life conditions, life continues.
